Extra Payment Calculator Questions

Straight answers from a California mortgage broker.

Every extra dollar goes to principal, so it removes interest at your loan's rate for the rest of the term. At 6.5% that beats most savings accounts. If you carry credit card debt at 20%+, pay that first; run the Blended Rate calculator to compare.
If today's rates are well below yours, refinancing lowers the cost of every remaining dollar; extra payments then shorten the new loan. If rates are higher than your current loan, keep it and pay extra instead.
Conventional, FHA, and VA loans have none. Some non-QM and investor loans do; check your note or ask us before paying ahead.
